There has to be a direct connection between length of sermon and hardness of pew. It’s impossible in many churches to get into a comfortable enough position to escape from sermon-induced boredom into sleep. Which must be a form of torture.
Rev. Ditchwater's sermons were so bad that people were known to 'fall asleep' in the biblical sense.
