Windows into Heaven:
A presentation, workshop or short retreat
My experience of icons began in the 1980s, when I went to an exhibition of Greek icons in London. There I encountered an icon of Christ in an experience which was like a moment of conversion. Soon after, I started attending the Russian Orthodox Church in London, then led by the charismatic Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh.
Since then, I’ve studied the icon tradition and for a time joined an icon painting school to learn the theology which underpins icon-making. And I’ve written a book, Windows into Heaven, on the icons and spirituality of Russia.
This presentation focuses on the history, theology and spirituality of icons. We look at icons as a call to prayer, as theology in colour, and as windows into heaven. The workshop also includes the opportunity for participants to encounter icons for themselves, with a short, structured time of prayer before large icons on stands (pictured right).
